The motto of the Edmund Rice Society is “Christ Like Service”. Brother Bon Sheriff, who worked to St Laurence’s College for over thirty years, until his retirement in 1991, founded the society so that, like Edmund Rice, students could attempt to gain meaning about their lives by reflecting and confronting some of the harsh social and political realities facing the youth of today through prayer and community action.
In the same spirit of Edmund, the members of the Society carry on his mission by praying for their own welfare and the welfare of their family and friends, and the service activities that St Laurence’s students partake within and outside of the school. Prayer gives us the opportunity to open our hearts and minds as we come together to serve in the same tradition of Blessed Edmund Rice.
Through community action each student has the opportunity to serve those less fortunate than themselves and instil in themselves a sense of justice for all, regardless of age, gender and creed.
The ownership of the Society belongs to the students and is supported by a College Staff Member (Miss Ruth Raymond) who liaises with the College’s Leadership Team.
