Chess

“Chess is a foolish expedient for making idle people believe they are doing something very clever when they are only wasting their time.” George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950)

George Bernard Shaw obviously wasn’t a chess enthusiast, however a number of St Laurence’s boys have been. This enthusiasm enabled them to win the AIC Aggregate Trophy for five of the first six years of AIC competition. Chess has been conducted as an AIC sport since 2004. There are two Senior and two Junior teams of four boys. Competition is conducted over seven Friday afternoons on a home and away basis during Term 2 each year.

St Laurence’s Primary Students compete in the Brisbane Independent Schools Competition for Chess. The Chess competition is open for students from Years 5 to 7.

Ms Peta Bruce is the CIC & AIC Director of Chess.
