“When it comes to skiing, there's a difference between what you think it's going to be like, what it's really like, and what you tell your friends it was like.” Br John Hansen
Each year, since 1983, in the winter school holidays, St Laurence’s College conducts a Ski Tour to the Snowy Mountains in Southern NSW for Year 7 students. Several times the boys travelled to New Zealand to ski in Queenstown. Br John Hansen and Mr John Cusack conducted the tours for many years until Br Hansen left for North Queensland in the nineties. John Cusack continued the tradition until his retirement 2007.
Over the years the tour involved an arduous twenty-four hour bus trip to the snow interspersed with soccer and rugby matches against Waverley in Sydney, visiting national institutions in Canberra and skiing at Perisher in the Snowy Mountains. In 2007, we traded in the overnight bus trip and opted for a much more pleasant plane fight from Brisbane to Canberra where the boys visit the Australian Parliament House, Old Parliament House, the Australian War Memorial and Questacon or the National Museum.
Following the Canberra visit, we undertake a two hour bus drive to our base at the Snowgate Motel in Berridale. Skiing takes place on Mt Blue Cow with occasional visits to Guthega and Perisher.
The Ski Tour Coordinator is Mr Brian Toohey.
