Principal's Address

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

I have been most pleased with the application of our Year 5, 7 & 9 boys as they complete NAPLAN testing for 2022. Many staff have been involved in preparing the boys for these tests. NAPLAN provides valuable data to assist us with supporting our students’ learning. This data as well as several other sources allows us to target specific areas of growth. I thank Dr Herbert, Ms Gunn, Mrs Harris, Mr Smith, Ms Bell, Ms Hall, Mrs Jordan, Mrs Kentrotis, Ms Smallacombe, Mr Russell, Mr Plowman, Year 5 teachers and IT staff for their work here.

YEAR 11 EXAMS

Our Year 11 students begin exam block on Thursday of this week. Mr Knight has reinforced our expectations over this period as it is a privilege to have this flexible exam block.  This period allows the boys to have the best possible opportunity to achieve good results.

ROUND 3 AIC SPORT

The AIC Principals have taken the decision to cancel all Round 3 Rugby, Football & Chess fixtures this weekend. Obviously, many grounds are unplayable for both Rugby and Football. We are also aware that some families at AIC schools are once again flood affected. It is not safe or possible for some families to journey to sports events. Because of this, Chess has also been cancelled for tonight. In the spirit of AIC, we felt that should some games proceed and others be cancelled that this would not be fair for all school communities. We hope to have a full round of fixtures in Round 4.

YEAR 5 & 7 TRANSITION DATA

This year we have surveyed our Year 5 and Year 7 boys as they begin their Lauries’ Journey or move into Secondary Education. The aim is to hear from the students about their experiences at the College and to hear their voices to improve our practice into the future.

The results of these surveys shows that the vast majority of boys have settled very well into College life. It is obvious from the data, that many boys struggle with the different pace of learning at the college. However, the boys feel safe, accepted and they value the relationships with staff. Following further analysis of these reports, we will alter our transition program in both Primary and Secondary school.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP

Most Friday mornings, I meet with Lachlan Rolls (Captain), James Francis (Vice-Captain) and Jonathan Heard (Vice-Captain) to speak about their wellbeing and to support them in their leadership at the college. These meetings are excellent and provide me with some valuable insights. I am most impressed with our student leaders and the Year 12 cohort in the way that they model servant leadership and consider the welfare of the younger boys. Culturally this is most significant for me. I congratulate the Year 12 cohort for this leadership over the course of this year. They love their school.

LAURIES COMMUNITY COMMITTEE

On Monday evening, our Director of IT, Mr Nick Lieschke and Dean of Middle School, Ms Vanessa Bell spoke to the parents in attendance at the LCC. Nick spoke of IT developments and plans for the future. Ms Bell spoke of some exciting initiatives in the area of parent engagement and information. I thank Tanya Hansen and her committee for facilitating this night.

I trust that the weather improves, and I pray that we all can stay safe and well in the coming days

College Identity

FROM THE DEAN OF IDENTITY & COMMUNITY

MONTH OF MARY & MOTHER'S DAY

Last weekend we celebrated Mothers and I do hope all the Mothers in our community enjoyed their day with family. May is traditionally dedicated to honouring the Blessed Virgin Mary, in our college grounds on a daily basis we stop to pray the Angelus in honour of this. In the month of May the church calls us to open our hearts in a special way to Mary. Her presence in our lives is a motherly presence and we call her our Blessed Mother, Pope Francis recently said the following about Mary:

“When I think of a model with whom young people can identify, our Mother, Mary, always comes to mind: her courage, the way she knew how to listen, and her dedication to service.”

When Pope Francis talked about Mary, he spoke of her as being courageous and determined and that to follow Mary we need to discern what Jesus wants from us. Her simple act in her life was her love and dedication to her family. Beyond this she teaches us to view the world through eyes of love even at our most challenging times and to always look out for the vulnerable and marginalised.

Pope Francis also stressed that in this month of May we take time to continue our prayers for Ukraine. The Pope made a new passionate plea to all sides “to avoid a continual military and verbal escalation” and to “embark on the way of dialogue and peace.”

Scripture Reading

A reading from the prophet Isaiah (Is 66:13)

For this is what the LORD says: “I will extend peace to her like a river, and the wealth of nations like a flowing stream; you will nurse and be carried on her arm, and bounced upon her knees. As a mother comforts her son, so I will comfort you, and you will be consoled over Jerusalem.

Blessing

Heavenly Father,

On this Mother’s Day, we thank You for our mothers through whom Your gift of life begins and through whom we are nurtured into great human beings.

We lift up all mothers to Your love and care. We pray for them, for their strength and nourishment, in honour and love for You, our God.

Help them continue to be a guiding light in times of great change. Keep them in Your heart today as they continue to grow brightly in ours.

Be with her as she looks out of the window. Strengthen her heart in hope that we, all of Your children, receive Your love and protection.

In union with St. Joseph, whom you entrusted with Your Son, we ask Your generous blessings this morning as we pause to share some quality time together and every day.

Amen.

GROWING GOOD MEN: FATHER AND SON EXPERIENCE

This experimentally-based program encourages and enables fathers and sons to strengthen their relationships and to explore important issues growing into manhood. It is deigned for fathers and their adolescent sons aged 12-17 years of age. The weekend, hosted by Men Alive, is from the 24-26 June. Please click here for more information. We would love to know if you are attending so please email pcorfield@slc.qld.edu.au if you are going.

Teaching & Learning

FROM THE DEAN OF TEACHING & LEARNING

NAPLAN ONLINE

Congratulations to our Year 5, 7 and 9 students who completed NAPLAN Online this week. Students’ behaviour was excellent. The preparation workshops and practice tests helped to increase student efficacy in test procedures.

A reminder that if your son missed any sessions, he will need to go to one of the catch up sessions held by Ms Gunn in the Pastoral Precinct. I thank the NAPLAN Team, the IT Department led by Nick Lieschke, Will Pike and Samantha Harris for their work.

YEAR 11 ASSESSMENT BLOCK

Year 11’s have begun their assessment block which concludes on Wednesday 18 May. A reminder that students need to follow assessment block expectations. These include:

  • Students are to travel to and from school in full school uniform. This is regardless of the purpose of attendance and the length of time on campus
  • Students are only allowed to be at school outside of exams times if they are studying or seeking teacher guidance
  • Students are to arrive at least 30mins before their scheduled start time
  • Students are to arrive with the correct equipment
  • The assessment block schedule will be sent to students very soon

Your assistance with ensuring that these expectations are adhered to is greatly appreciated.

YEAR 12 - CONFIRMATION OF RESULTS

Confirmed results from the QCAA will be released from next Monday 16 May. The College has uploaded complimentary samples to support submissions this week for some subjects. I hope we start receiving these results promptly, particularly as I was very happy with the provisional results. Students should be able to view their confirmed result/s in their QCAA My Student account from next week also. Well done boys – keep up the great effort.

STUDY STARTER

A reminder to parents that Study Starter is continuing for students. It is a free tutoring service conducted in the Library every Monday and Wednesday after school until 4.30pm. The intention is to support students who need extra help with their studies, and also provide an environment where quiet study and assignment work can occur. All students are welcome.

Live Jesus in our hearts…Forever!

Best wishes,

DR LIAM HERBERT
Dean of Teaching and Learning

NAPLAN

This week saw our Year 5, 7 and 9 students participate in the NAPLAN test. A special thank you must go to Ms Sarah Gunn, Mr Ben Russell, Ms Vanessa Bell, Ms Samantha Harris and Dr Liam Herbert for their organisation and commitment to ensuring the boys were given every opportunity to complete the test in an effective testing environment to the best of their ability.

YEAR 9 MOTHER AND SON EVENING
Ms Vanessa Bell

Thank you to all of the mums and sons who attended our Year 9 Mother & Son Evening last Friday night. It was an enjoyable evening that provided our students with the opportunity to spend some time with the significant female in their life playing frivolous games or chatting about various topics over a packet of Smarties. Mums also had the opportunity to help paint a mural of Laurie the Lion in the gym leaving a lasting memento of the night. Thank you to all of the SLC staff who helped to make the evening a successful, memorable event. Sincere thanks also goes to the 20 Year 11 students who gave up their time to run activities and cook a barbeque for our Year 9 students.

YEAR 11 CATHOLIC STUDIES

Our Year 11 students have been participating in leadership workshops with various Heads of House and staff at the College. These workshops start the Senior Leadership Journey which culminate with the selection of student leaders (School Captains, Prefects and House Captains) for 2023. Our focus has been on servant leadership, with various workshops that are imbedded within the Catholic Studies curriculum. I would like to thank all members of the pastoral team for their work in establishing this valuable Year 11 formation opportunity.

INTERNET SAFETY - Upcoming Student and Parent Presentations
Mr Tim Mallon, Head of Rice House

There are many benefits in allowing our children to embrace technologies such as computers and mobile phones. However, it is also important that we understand how to protect our families against the risks associated with these devices. The College has scheduled Brett Lee from Internet Safe Education to speak to our students about internet safety and cyberbullying on Wednesday 25 May. We feel that it's important to also deliver this message to parents and as such there will be a webinar for parents to be held at 5pm that evening. Topics include:

  • Protective and preventative measures
  • Offender methodology
  • The law and internet
  • Social networking
  • Instant messaging and communication
  • Online gaming
  • Cyber bullying
  • Sexting

This is a live event in which Brett will share his experience and anecdotes from 22 years as a Queensland Police Officer and detective specialising in the online space. All parents are encouraged to register, as a recording will also be available following the presentation.

Registrations can be made via the following link: https://event.webinarjam.com/register/228/lx9zos57.

CYBER SAFETY UPDATE - from Family Zone

Recent Family Zone data has shown shows a spike in the use of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), as students increasingly seek to bypass traditional school firewall internet filtering to access blocked content - especially social media, games, adult and violent material. The resulting distraction from learning is significant. But VPN use also exposes students to cyberbullying and other online harms.

But VPN use isn’t solely a technological problem - it’s also a behavioural one. So, education is also required - and awareness on the part of the entire school community that the practice constitutes a serious form of digital disobedience with serious consequences. Family Zone’s powerful technology will help put a stop to VPN use - and educate our school community about why online safety matters.

For more information about Family Zone, please click on the link HERE or contact the College’s IT support via email ITHelpdesk@slc.qld.edu.au. They will assist in installing this parent controlled application onto your son’s laptop.

I wish all parents and students the very best and as always.

Live Jesus in your hearts……..Forever!

Dean of Pastoral Care

Sport & Culture

FROM THE SPORTS DEPARTMENT

Unfortunately, the weather has got the better of our AIC Competition again this week. Today the AIC Management Committee has made the decision to cancel the whole round of sport. This includes all Chess, Rugby and Football Fixtures. This was a challenging decision for the Heads of Colleges but was made in the interest of the health and safety of both our students and families at the fields and on the roads over the weekend. Our hope is that there is a break in the weather over the weekend, and sport will resume next week.

I have included some photos taken from Runcorn this morning.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all families who are effected by the weather this week.

MR EDDIE WALLACE
Director of Sport

FROM THE MUSIC DEPARTMENT

SLC DEBATING

Over the course of the first month of term 2, our mighty, indefatigable, imperious SLC debating teams completed Round 3 of the QDU competitions. We have braved some humbling defeats, but we have also gorged on the sweet nectar of victory, at times leaving a bit of a mess on our leonine maws. At end of this round, we still have many of our teams in contention for the finals – news that will no doubt send tremors of terror and despair down the spines of our opposition.

Our 8.1 team (Kyle Abasolo, Ewan Thompson, Lachlan Wintour, Cohen Dangaard (chair)) and 8.2 (Lorenzo Kleynendorst, Nate Ryder, Mason Wills) teams lost to Cannon Hill Anglican College by the slimmest of margins.

Our 9.1 team (Medhansh Sekri, Darcy Bryan, Dinel Ratnasekera, Hamza Al-Laith (timekeeper)) went head-to-head with Girls Grammar and achieved a hard-won victory. Our 9.2 team (Mackinnon Moffat, Oscar Clancy, Simeon Jeremijenko, Chinonso Njoko) had a bye this round.

Our Year 10.1 team (Jamin Somerfield, Jacob Elder, Patrick Woolley, Jack Williams (chair)) refused to be intimidated by Brisbane Boys Grammar, and soundly routed their opposition to snatch yet another debating win. Year 10.2 (Jack Longley, Gianluca Josey, Alastair Greensill, Alex Brimblecombe (timekeeper)) went down swinging to the Brisbane Christian College.

Our 11.1 (Max Rossberg, Jack Montague, Cruze Bunting) and 11.2 (Kai Klisanin, Sam Steiner, Cornelius Brummer, Joseph Arroyo Rivas) teams both lost to colleges from Moreton Bay College and Moreton Bay Boys College.

Our Year 12 teams went up against the formidable Brisbane State High teams. Our 12.1 team (Dominic Wojciechowski, Nicholas Adames, Ethan Bryan, and Jack Hobbs (timekeeper)) lost by a narrow margin, but our 12.2 team (Lachlan Munns, Joshua Knight, Dante Vickers, and Jonathan Halicos (timekeeper)) clinched a nail-biting victory. Both of our Year 12 teams remain in contention for the finals – which is quite a feat to squeeze into a final year of schooling.

Next round begins in week 4, with the year 10 and 12 teams debating on Wednesday 18 May.
