There, you can access up to date resume and cover letter templates, gain insights into work experience opportunities in 2024, explore presentation slides used in information sessions for both students and parents, make a tax file number application, and explore university study options while still in school.

QUT Advice Night

Year 11 and 12 students and parents are invited to join QUT online on Tuesday 11 March to find out about course and career planning, how to apply, resources to support students through their studies and life as a uni student. Register here.

QUT library membership and resources for students and teachers

Years 10–12 Queensland students can gain access to a free QUT library membership, which includes a range of resources to help them develop essential research and information skills for study success. From the self-paced Study Smart course to research guides, referencing tools and access to QUT libraries, students can find the support they need to research, reference and write with confidence. Find out more

On 1 April QUT will be hosting a START QUT webinar for Year 11 student who are wanting to study a Uni subject during Semester 2.With the START QUT program, syou can receive a selection rank adjustment, gain potential credit towards a future degree at QUT and test drive university life. 2025 Engineering, Design and Computing Ambassador Program

Year 11 student nominations for the 2025 Engineering, Design and Computing Ambassador Program are now open. The program will challenge you to develop your leadership abilities and communication skills and offer you the chance to connect with like-minded students across Queensland and Northern NSW. The following information regarding key dates will aid your organisation and preparation.

Bookings open: Tuesday 4 March 2025

Bookings close: Friday 16 May 2025 at 11.59pm

Late booking close: Friday 30 May 2025 at 11.59pm

Testing period: 1 July - 5 August 2025

Students can begin applying direct to the Australian National University in just a few weeks with applications opening on 3 March 2025.

Applications are free and include applying for admission, accommodation and scholarships in one application.

Offers will be initially released in September using Year 11 or equivalent results and adjustment factors to calculate their selection rank. Students who receive an offer need to complete their final year and obtain an ATAR or equivalent.

Tuckwell Scholarship – Australian National University (ANU)

The Tuckwell Scholarship Program grants up to 25 scholarships annually, providing gifted and driven students with the chance to unlock their potential through financial assistance, personal growth, and developmental opportunities. Students can build connections and gain insights from fellow recipients in our on-campus residence, Scholars House.

This scholarship spans three to five years of undergraduate study at ANU, with a value ranging from $76,000 to $136,000.

Academically high achieving students who are open to the idea of studying interstate next year are encouraged to read through the terms of the scholarship and consider applying. Applications are due by early April.

NOTE: if a student applies and is successful, but changes their mind later, they are not obliged to go, so students who are unsure can still apply and consider their final decision around where they will study throughout the year.

Preparations for this years’ SLConX Careers Networking Events are underway, with the topics for this year being:

  • 2 June – Careers in Trades
  • 26 August – Careers in STEM

Defence Force work experience program

The Defence Work Experience Program provides opportunities for young Australians interested in a career at Defence to gain exposure to the type of work that is available. Defence is committed to providing a national work experience program designed to:

  • demonstrate the wide variety of interesting careers available within Defence
  • ease the transition of students into the workplace
  • contribute to the development of the skills of young Australians. 

Opportunities are available for both secondary and tertiary students and you must be at least 15 years of age at the time of the placement. Click here for more information including:

Thinking of applying to the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA)

Thinking of applying to the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA)

If you are in Year 11 and considering applying for a place at ADFA, you are encouraged to commence your application when you turn 16 years of age. To start your application, call 13 19 01 or apply online on the Defence Jobs website (click ‘Apply now’ found on the very top navigation bar on the home page). It is not too late for Year 12 students to apply but you need to start your application as soon as possible.

Think about joining the Australian Air Force Cadets (AAFC)

The AAFC is an inclusive youth development organisation that focuses on developing youth to fulfill their potential by providing training and experiences that enable them to be better off because of their experiences with the AAFC. From this, the following specific aims have been developed:

  • To give cadets a foundation of Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) knowledge and discipline
  • To develop qualities of leadership, self-reliance and initiative
  • To develop character and good citizenship in the widest sense
  • To develop an interest in the RAAF and aviation generally
  • To instill a knowledge of aviation history
  • To encourage cadets to continue an active interest in aviation into their adult life.

Experience UQ Skills

Experience UQ Skills on Thursday 16 May, is a free, full day of hands-on, interactive workshops at UQ Gatton for Years 9-12 students considering vocational study including apprenticeships and traineeships, in agriculture, allied health, animal care, entrepreneurship or maritime (boating) (including VETiS, Certificates, Diplomas Apprenticeships and Traineeships).
