Lauries Primary Curriculum Update - Jon Tracey

Dear Families,

Please see below some exciting curriculum and event updates for the Primary School in the coming weeks.

ICAS Competitions for High Potential Learners

In August, a number of high potential learners from the Primary School have been invited to participate in the ICAS (International Competitions and Assessments for Schools), commencing in Week 4. These students will be informed this week, and the assessments will take place during school hours.

The ICAS program, developed by the University of New South Wales, provides an opportunity for students to demonstrate their academic strengths in standardised assessments across a range of subjects. With a strong emphasis on higher order thinking and problem-solving, the competitions are tailored for students who excel in specific learning areas.

This year, our students will compete in:

  • Digital Technologies
  • English
  • Science
  • Mathematics

We look forward to receiving the score reports, which will offer valuable feedback. Each participant will receive a certificate of achievement and will be recognised at a future Primary Assembly. Awards include Participation, Merit, Credit, Distinction, and High Distinction.

We wish all our students the very best in their competitions!

Laurie’s Impact Academy Day

Formerly known as HPL on the Hill

On Thursday, 31 July, St Laurence’s College will host a special event for high-potential Primary students — Laurie’s Impact Academy. Coordinated by Ms Grace Loyden (Dean of Learning and Teaching) and Ms Naomi Lightbody (Assistant Head of Faculty – High Potential Learners), this event focuses on innovation, entrepreneurship, and collaborative problem-solving.

Students have been selected based on academic performance and consultation with their home class teachers. Further information has been sent home to families of those involved.

Book Week at Laurie’s Primary – Term 3, Week 5

We are excited to celebrate Book Week with a range of engaging activities across our Primary School, under this year’s theme: "Book an Adventure."

Character Parade

Monday, 11 August (Day 1, Week 5) – Period 1
Students are encouraged to dress as their favourite book character. There is no expectation to purchase costumes — creative, homemade outfits are encouraged and often the most memorable!

Author Visit – Brian Falkner

Tuesday, 12 August (Day 2, Week 5)

We are thrilled to welcome author Brian Falkner, who will share insights into his writing journey and inspire students with his storytelling.

Real Men Read Evening

Wednesday, 27 August, 5:00 – 7:00 pm

This cherished annual event invites boys and their dads (or another significant male role model) to enjoy a night of reading, fun, and connection.

The evening begins with a sausage sizzle at 5:00 pm outside the Chapel, followed by a short welcome at 5:30 pm and reading activities in the Library from 6:00 pm. There will be games, activities, and great prizes on offer!

If you and your son would like to attend, please RSVP via the Tours and Excursions tab in Parent Lounge.
