Collaborate to Elevate: The LEX Partnership
The Learning Exchange (LEX) program continues to grow as one of the most progressive and meaningful collaborative education initiatives within the Associated Independent Colleges (AIC). LEX brings together St Laurence’s College, Iona College and Padua College and represents a shared commitment to strengthening teaching practice, broadening learning opportunities and fostering deep connection and networks between the three communities. Staff collaborations are central to the connections and professional exchanges that typify LEX. At its heart, LEX reflects a simple but powerful principle: we proudly collaborate in learning improvement and respectfully compete in co-curricular.
A Shared Approach to Staff Development
One of the defining features of LEX is its cross College staff development program. Teachers and leaders from all three schools participate in formal and informal exchanges, professional learning experiences and classroom immersion opportunities. These exchanges allow staff to observe different approaches to teaching and learning, share expertise in areas such as literacy, wellbeing, pastoral care and pedagogy, share resources and take fresh insights back to their own community. Staff regularly engage in workshops, curriculum design sessions and leadership conversations, creating a professional network that extends beyond individual school gates. This collaboration not only enhances consistency between the three Colleges but also encourages innovation, as educators work together to refine best practice and explore new approaches that benefit students across each campus.
Students Leading Through Academic Collaboration
LEX has now also provided a unique opportunity for student leadership as seen in the recent meeting between each College’s Academic Prefects and leaders. The exchange focused on advancing academic culture within schools and in the wider community. Students discussed promotional strategies, compared successful programs and explored how to support younger learners and develop joint strategies for elevating academic pride within their respective Colleges and in the wider community.
These staff and student sessions would not be possible without the LEX Director, Michael Kearney. Michael’s leadership has played a vital role in shaping the identity and vision of the program. His part time role across the three Colleges involves coordinating professional exchanges, developing shared initiatives, supporting student led programs and fostering the long term sustainability of the partnership.
“Whether it’s sharing learning data and trends, exchanging resource tips and ideas or planning student well-being programs together, the staff across the schools show incredible commitment and enthusiasm to connect and collaborate,” Michael noted.
“The unique culture of story of each community enhances that of the others. There is a considered mutuality that binds the LEX community in ways I’ve not seen or experienced before.”
For Michael, stepping into the LEX Director position has also been a deeply personal experience. As an Old Boy of St Laurence’s College, he had not returned to Lauries in over 40 years. His involvement with LEX has brought him back through the College gates for the first time since graduating - a moment that reconnected him with the place where his own educational journey began.
Returning to his old school in a professional capacity has given Michael a unique perspective on the importance of collaboration and tradition. While much has changed since his time at Lauries, the values of community, excellence and service remain firmly embedded. The opportunity to link the past with the future, by supporting students and staff across the three Colleges, has been a defining highlight of his role.
LEX continues to evolve as a powerful example of what can be achieved when schools collaborate with purpose. Through shared learning, strong leadership and a commitment to excellence, St Laurence’s College, Iona College and Padua College are creating opportunities that honour their histories while shaping the future of education.
