The Importance of Stories about Relationships

From classic books like Anne of Green Gables to modern favourites like The Fault in Our Stars, stories about love and connection have always appealed to young people. These stories help teens think about friendships, emotions, and how they relate to others. During the teenage years, students are learning who they are, what matters to them, and how they fit into the world—so books that explore relationships can be especially powerful.

Research shows that reading about characters dealing with feelings help young people build empathy and understand themselves better. Books about love, friendship, and growing up give students a safe way to explore big emotions and see how others handle them. Many young adult novels popular through the ages have encouraged readers to think about kindness, courage, and the bonds that connect people.

As parents, supporting your teen to read stories about relationships can help them grow emotionally and socially. These books don’t just entertain; they help young people make sense of their own experiences.

So, next time your teen picks up a story about love or friendship, know that they’re doing more than reading, they’re learning how to understand themselves and others.

Here at the St Laurence's College Library, we have a range of amazing stories about friendships for our readers. Here are a few titles that we have on our shelves that show the importance of having friends and being a good one too!

  • The Night Bus Hero by Onjali Rauf

  • The Experiment by Rebecca Stead.

  • Sidekicks by Will Kostakis

  • Future Friend by David Baddiel

  • The Asparagus Bunch by Jessica Scott-Whyte

  • Look Me in the Eye by Jane Godwin
