Around the Grounds – Sport Rounds 4 and 5

Over the past two rounds of AIC competition, St Laurence’s College has faced Marist College Ashgrove at home before travelling away to Padua College. With just two weeks remaining in the season, attention now turns to a significant Round 6 clash against traditional rivals Iona College, where several Volleyball and AFL premierships are expected to be decided. The season will then conclude in Round 7 against St Peters Lutheran College.

AFL

The past fortnight has been a positive one for the AFL program, with strong performances across the aggregate teams. The First XVIII recorded an impressive victory in the annual 42 for 42 match against Marist College, before coming up against a very determined Padua College side in Round 5. While the result did not go our way, the commitment and effort shown by the boys was outstanding.

With a premiership likely to be decided in the upcoming clash with Iona College, we are confident the team will regroup and bounce back strongly for what promises to be a big match.

Cricket

Cricket continues to show strong commitment and resilience across the program. While results on the scoreboard do not always fully reflect the effort and improvement shown by our students and coaches each week, the teams have continued to compete hard and represent the College with pride.

A highlight over the past two rounds was the 10A match against Padua, played under lights at Gibson Park. This was a fantastic initiative and provided a memorable experience for the students involved. It is something we look forward to continuing in future seasons.

Volleyball

Volleyball has enjoyed another excellent two weeks, with many teams remaining undefeated or firmly in premiership contention heading into the final rounds of the season.

Our First VI has continued its remarkable run, with the standout moment being their thrilling come-from-behind victory against Marist College in Round 4. The match went to five sets and featured outstanding volleyball from both schools, producing what has been one of the games of the season so far.

Swimming

The swimming season concluded on Tuesday with the AIC Swimming Championships held at the Chandler Aquatic Centre. The boys performed strongly throughout the day and displayed excellent effort and team spirit in the pool.

Overall, the College finished 3rd in the Primary Division, while the Secondary School placed 5th overall. For much of the meet, the team was sitting in 4th position in what proved to be a very closely contested championship.

We extend our sincere thanks to Ms Meg Jacobs and the entire SLC Swimming staff for the countless hours of preparation, coaching and care they provide to our swimmers. We hope the staff and students enjoy a well-earned break following a busy and successful season.

Term 2 Sport Sign-On

As we begin preparations for Term 2 Sport — including Rugby Union, Football, Cross Country and Chess — we ask that parents please keep an eye out for Parent Lounge invitations to ensure their son is signed on for the upcoming season.

With just two rounds remaining in the current term of competition, we look forward to another exciting fortnight of AIC sport and wish all teams the very best as they finish the season strongly.
