Sport Update
It has been an exciting and energetic start to the Term 2 sporting season. With all trials now completed, our teams officially opened their campaigns last weekend against Villanova College. It proved to be a successful opening round, highlighted by victories to our First Football and Rugby teams, while our First Chess team fought hard in a narrow defeat. Across every sport, our students represented the College with pride, producing strong performances and competitive results throughout the program. The commitment, teamwork and school spirit shown by our boys have provided a terrific platform for the season ahead.
There is plenty to look forward to this weekend as St Laurence’s College takes on St Patrick’s College in what promises to be another highly competitive round of fixtures. Adding to the excitement is the return of Fields 1, 2 and 3 at Runcorn, which are back in action following their redevelopment during the middle of last year. The newly renovated Rugby ovals on Fields 1 and 2 are in outstanding condition, while the purpose-built Football field on Field 3 looks exceptional. We are thrilled to finally welcome teams back to Runcorn and host games once again on these fantastic facilities.
The following week, our teams travel away to take on St Edmund’s College. Playing Eddies in Ipswich is always a challenging assignment, and our boys will no doubt be eager to embrace that opportunity. These upcoming rounds promise to be excellent occasions for our sporting community, and we encourage all students, families and supporters to get behind our teams throughout the season.
Cross Country
Cross Country remains the AIC Championship Sport for Term 2, and our athletes have been working extremely hard in preparation for the season ahead. Last Friday also saw the running of the annual Woody Cup, where our Open Cross Country squad competed against a team of Old Boys in a spirited and enjoyable contest. In a fantastic result, our current students claimed victory for the first time in several years. The event was a wonderful celebration of both competition and community spirit, with all involved thoroughly enjoying the occasion.
The AIC Warm-Up Cross Country Meets are also approaching, with the opening event scheduled for May 20 at Curlew Park. We encourage all aspiring runners to attend, post a time, and gain valuable race experience ahead of the championship season.
