From the Pastoral Office

Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope this newsletter finds you well and that your sons are thriving as we move further into Term 2 here at St Laurence’s College. This time of year often brings a renewed focus on academic goals, co-curricular involvement and personal growth. I am continually inspired by the dedication and spirit our students display across all facets of College life, from the classroom to the sporting fields and beyond.

The first three weeks of Term have flown by at a frenetic pace. With the busyness of Term 2 sport in full swing, amazing ensemble concerts last week, our Edmund Rice Feast Day Mass and in between all of that, some quality learning and teaching has occurred.

Year 11 Exam Block

Exam Block begins this Wednesday 13 May, and we wish this cohort all the very best. Students are aware of the policies, procedures and expectations associated with block assessment.  Everything from punctuality, uniform and using their study time wisely is essential to a successful exam period.

Omoggle not Omegle

A recent article from Safe on Social, titled “Miss, Have You Heard of Omoggle?”, highlights an emerging online trend affecting young people, driven by new livestream and AI‑based platforms that rank appearance and social value. The article explains how these spaces can quietly shape a young person’s sense of worth during adolescence, a time when identity and belonging are still developing. Rather than responding with alarm, the author encourages parents to have open, curious conversations with their children—asking what they are seeing online, how it makes them feel and reinforcing the message that their value is never determined by algorithms, likes or appearance scores. You can read the full article here: Safe on Social – “Miss, Have You Heard of Omoggle?”.

I encourage all families to maintain open communication with your son’s teachers, Heads of House and their House Mentor. Working together ensures we can address any concerns early and celebrate all achievements, big and small. If your son is facing any challenges, please don’t hesitate to reach out – we are here to help.

Finally, I thank you for your ongoing support and partnership. It is through our shared commitment that we continue to build a strong, vibrant community for all Laurie's boys. I look forward to seeing many of you at upcoming College events and wish every family a positive and productive term ahead.

I wish all parents and students the very best and as always,

Live Jesus in your hearts…Forever!
