From the Dean of Identity and Community

On Tuesday 5 May, our College community came together to celebrate the Feast Day of Blessed Edmund Rice - an important occasion in the life of our College and a moment to reflect on who we are, what we stand for and the story we are called to continue.

Students, staff and invited guests gathered to honour the life and legacy of a man whose journey began, like all of ours, with empty hands. The reflection shared throughout the liturgy reminded us that Edmund Rice did not begin with certainty or a grand plan. His life was marked by loss, grief and questions about the future. Yet, in that openness, Edmund allowed God to work within him. Through his encounter with the Gospel and the example of Jesus Christ, Edmund’s life was transformed, inspiring him to respond courageously to the suffering and injustice he witnessed around him.

Students reflected on how Edmund chose not only to act, but to walk in the experience of others - standing in solidarity with the poor, the excluded and those denied opportunity. His response led to the creation of schools and communities built on dignity, hope and belonging; a legacy that continues strongly within Edmund Rice Education today. A key focus of the celebration was the enduring importance of the four Touchstones of Edmund Rice Education Australia: Gospel Spirituality, Inclusive Community, Justice and Solidarity and Liberating Education. Students were reminded that these are not simply words displayed around the College, but values we are all called to live each day.

The symbolism of the EREA candle also formed part of the celebration, representing the shared mission and unity of Edmund Rice schools across Australia. It served as a reminder that our College is part of something far greater- a community committed to carrying forward Edmund’s vision through faith, compassion, courage and service.

As a College community, we were challenged to consider an important question:

“What will we do with what we have been given?”

Like Edmund Rice, we are all called to take the next step; to walk with purpose, live the Gospel and continue carrying this light forward in our own lives and communities.

Live Jesus in our Hearts... Forever!

Live Jesus in our Hearts. . . Forever!
