From the Music Department

The Music Department has enjoyed a strong start to Term 2, with students immersed in rehearsals, lessons and preparations for an exciting calendar of performances and events. We are looking forward to the upcoming opportunities for our students to perform and continue developing their musical skills, and we thank our families for their ongoing support of music at the College.

LMSG Meeting

This Tuesday 12 May, we will have our first Lauries Music Support Group Meeting of the Term. This is an invitation to all parents who are involved in the Music program to attend the meeting and connect with staff and other parents who are involved.

The meeting will be held from 6-7pm at St Laurence’s College in MU1 which is in the VAPA Building. Please feel free to attend as we discuss upcoming music events, concerts and ways to continue to support our musicians here at Lauries.

Voice Recital

We’re excited to invite you to our first recital of the year, a special Voice Showcase featuring 24 of our talented students, each performing a song to celebrate their hard work and progress throughout Semester 1. The recital will be held in the ERPAC Foyer, this Monday 11 May from 4.30pm to 5.30pm, and we would love you to join us in supporting our students and enjoying an afternoon of wonderful music.

Junior Ensembles Concert

The Music Department is delighted to announce our Junior Ensembles Concert will be held on Thursday 21 May! The concert is a highly anticipated night among the primary school with many students performing on stage for the very first time, making it an exciting milestone for our young musicians.

The night will feature performances from Concert Band 3, Big Band 3, String Orchestra 3, Treblehood, Year 5 Concert Band, Year 5 String Orchestra, Year 5 Guitar Ensemble and the Year 5 Choir. Families can look forward to a vibrant program full of enthusiasm, growth and musical achievement.

A pre-concert BBQ & Bar will be available in the ERPAC foyer from 4.45pm for guests attending the performance. However, to facilitate this, we kindly seek the support of volunteers from our school community. Volunteer sign-up is now open, and we would greatly appreciate your support to help make this event a success for our students. We thank the few parents who have already signed up. Please register your interest by using the link here.

Thank you in advance for your generosity and support!

Theory of Music Lessons

Did you know the SLC Music Department offers group classes for the Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB) Theory of Music syllabus?

Students have the opportunity to study in a class on Monday afternoons after school from 3pm – 4pm. All levels from Grades 1 to 5 are offered; Grade 4 is the maximum required for Grade 8 Practical exams. Students study their relevant level with a tutor and then can sit the formal AMEB theory of music exam and obtain their certificate.

By participating in Music theory, it bridges the gap between classroom learning, ensemble work and instrumental lessons. Lessons will provide a shared language of music, enabling students to understand how music works and apply that knowledge to their own practice and performance. Beyond this, studying theory fosters critical thinking and offers valuable intellectual stimulation, helping students develop more advanced analytical skills.

The lessons are only $70 per term. The minimum group size is 6 students for the class to run.

If you would like to sign up for lessons, please find the Music Theory Enrolment form here. You may either drop the signed contract at reception in the Music Department or send the document via email to: music@slc.qld.edu.au

Music Communications

The Music Department will use the College App as our main point of contact with families. Information for the events above will be posted under the relevant groups.

Please take a couple of minutes to update your subscriptions to ensure you receive the relevant notifications for each ensemble via the app.
