From the Music Department

As Term 2 draws to a close, the Music Department would like to sincerely thank everyone who contributed to the success of our events over the past nine weeks. This term, we proudly hosted 10 events—including concerts, recitals and workshops—and these would not have been possible without the dedication and support of our staff, students, parents and invited guests.

We would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Lauries Music Support Group for their invaluable organisation and ongoing support in ensuring our events run smoothly. Their efforts play a vital role in enhancing our community experience, from coordinating refreshments such as the bar and BBQ to organising raffles and prizes that make each event so enjoyable. Your efforts do not go unnoticed and we thank you for the positive impact you make for our community.

Mitch Wilson – Old Boy

The Music Department were delighted to welcome back 2023 Old Boy Mitchell Wilson, who generously returned to St Laurence’s College to perform at the Cabaret Concert on 29 May.

Currently studying voice at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Mitchell delivered a standout performance of You’re the Voice by John Farnham, bringing the evening to a memorable close. We are especially grateful for his commitment to attending several early morning rehearsals in the lead-up to the concert.

Mitchell’s presence added a touch of professionalism to the evening, and his continued musical pursuits beyond Lauries make him an inspiring role model for our students.

Term 2 Holidays

Pemulwuy National Male Voice Festival

The Brotherhood has been invited again to the Pemulwuy National Male Voice Festival and will take place on July 3-5 2026. The group has performed as a featured choir at every Pemulwuy since its inception in 2011, as it celebrates male voices and offers a unique opportunity for our students to learn from and perform alongside other talented male choirs from across the country.

The festival is hosted between Brisbane Girls Grammar School and Brisbane Grammar School, featuring workshops, performances and rehearsals with renowned conductors and singers. There are many Old Boys of the College who list Pemulwuy as a truly life-changing event. The festival will culminate in a concert on the main stage of QPAC, the state’s premier performance venue, where your son/s will have the opportunity to showcase their skills and perform for a large audience.

State Honours Ensembles Program (SHEP)

The State Honours Ensemble Program (SHEP) is a Queensland Conservatorium initiative that brings together talented school-aged musicians from across the state to rehearse and perform in high-level ensembles under leading national and international conductors.

Held from 9–11 July, the Southeast Queensland program is an intensive three-day experience where students rehearse in specialised ensembles across scheduled sessions before presenting a final concert performance. This year, we will have 24 students participating in the program.

SHEP provides a valuable opportunity for young musicians to collaborate with peers, refine their skills and experience the excitement of creating music at an advanced level. We are looking forward to hearing about it after the holidays!
