Mentoring Day: The Significance of Partnership Between Home and School

At St Laurence's College, we know that young men achieve their best when families and educators work together. Mentoring Day is a dedicated opportunity to strengthen this partnership through purposeful conversations about each student's learning, wellbeing, growth and future aspirations.

On Monday 27 July, the College will hold a Student Free Day to bring together these important conversations. Rather than adopting a one-size-fits-all approach, each phase of learning has a distinct purpose that reflects students' developmental and educational needs.

Years 5–6 – Student-Led Conferences
Students will take the lead in sharing their learning, celebrating achievements and reflecting on their goals. Families may choose to attend either on campus or online via Microsoft Teams.

Years 7–8 – MaPS (Mentor and Parent Student) Interviews
These conversations focus on students' transition into the secondary years, Semester 1 progress, wellbeing and goals for the remainder of the year.

Year 9 – Subject Selection Interviews
Students and families will meet with staff to discuss subject choices for Year 10, ensuring decisions align with each student's interests, strengths and future aspirations.

Years 10–12 – Parent-Student-Teacher Interviews
These interviews provide an opportunity to celebrate progress, discuss academic performance and identify strategies that will support each student's continued success throughout the senior years.

Making the Most of Mentoring Day

These conversations are most valuable when students are actively involved. We encourage families to:

  • Talk with your son beforehand about his learning, achievements and any questions he would like to ask.
  • Celebrate strengths and progress, while also identifying one or two realistic goals for the term ahead.
  • Encourage your son to take ownership of the conversation by sharing his reflections and aspirations.
  • View the interview as the beginning of an ongoing partnership between home and school, rather than simply a report on results.

For students in Years 7–12, all interviews will be conducted online via Microsoft Teams. Families with sons across different phases of learning may have more than one interview to book, so we encourage allowing sufficient time between appointments.

Detailed information about interview formats, booking instructions and key dates has been emailed to families. Please refer to your email to book your interview(s) and access all relevant information.
