2025 Wrap-up | Music and Sport

In the College's 110th year, our esteemed co-curricular programs and activities thrived. Success was found in all arenas, with a selection of the highlights included below:

Sport

  • The College engaged students in 16 different sports across AIC competitions plus local and state tournaments.
  • Our First XVIII AFL successfully defended its Premiership title, as well as winning the AFLQ Schools Cup for the first time.
  • The First XIII Rugby League team won Division 2 of the Confraternity Carnival in Rockhampton - the College's first League title in the competition.
  • Both our U13 and U15 Futsal teams were crowned State Champions and will represent QLD at the National Titles.
  • AIC season aggregate results: Seven of our nine First teams finished in the top three of their respective competitions, including Volleyball, Rugby Union, Football, Chess, Tennis and Basketball. Our AIC Golf team won the Mr Gordon Balharry Net Shield - our first AIC Golf title in 24 years.
  • Another successful year for the College in our ‘Colours Cup’ where students who were not selected for AIC teams still engage in their chosen sport through an internal competition. Sports included in the Colours Cup includes Cricket, Volleyball, Basketball, Tennis and Chess. This initiative, while focusing on fostering active participation, has also become a pathway for talent discovery, with several participants moving on to represent the College at A and First levels.
  • Nearly 30 Primary teams competed in multiple sports throughout the year. The energy, pride and enthusiasm shown by our Primary students are clear indicators that the future of sport at Lauries is in great hands

Music

  • As a collective, the program has delivered more than fifty performances across concerts, workshops, camps and community events. Some of our milestone highlights include the Cabaret Concert and Jazz on the Hill.
  • Seventeen Lauries music ensembles participated in the Queensland Catholic Colleges Music Festival (QCMF), with 10 being awarded gold and 7 achieving silver. A wonderful reflection of the work our students have achieved this year.
  • Hosted another successful LIZID Concert Series whereby students nominate to perform for their peers during lunchbreaks.
  • Many students participated in the State Honours Ensemble Program, run by Griffith University's Queensland Conservatorium. Students participated in the prestigious program, taking part in intensive workshops by eminent conductors. Two students, Lewis H (Year 11) and Hugh M (Year 12) were selected for the Australian Honours Ensemble Program. Selection for this part of the program is via audition only and includes only the finest musicians from across the country.
  • Our treble singers from Years 5-8 were featured in the mass choir at one of the most significant events of the year: Voices of Birralee’s 30th Anniversary Concert at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) in August.
