Readers Cup: Celebrating Teamwork, Literacy and a Love of Reading
Readers Cup planning has begun for 2026 with the competition occurring in early June. This week, several students have eagerly signed on with the Mrs Templeton in the library to so that teams can be organised before the Easter break.
Readers Cup encourages teamwork, critical thinking and a genuine love of books. Working together, students read a selection of novels and then compete in a quiz‑style challenge that tests their comprehension, recall and collaborative problem‑solving skills.
Beyond the friendly competition, Readers Cup highlights the many benefits of reading. Regular reading builds vocabulary, strengthens comprehension, improves focus and nurtures empathy as students step into the lives and experiences of others. Importantly, reading is also a highly social activity—it gives students shared stories to discuss, debate and enjoy together, creating meaningful connections through books.
At our school, this love of reading continues beyond the competition. Our Primary Book Club, Lauries Literature Legends, meeting fortnightly on Wednesdays D8 during second break, offers a relaxed and inclusive space where students can talk about what they’re reading, discover new authors and enjoy the social side of literature.
We are incredibly proud of our students’ enthusiasm and commitment and look forward to supporting them as they embark on another exciting Readers Cup season. If you feel your young man would like to be involved, please encourage them to come to the meetings or send an email to ttempleton@slc.qld.edu.au.
