The Power of Peer Recommendations in Reading

When it comes to choosing their next great read, young people are often most inspired by each other. Peer recommendations help students feel more confident when browsing for books because they come from voices they trust. This year, students have begun writing reviews for the books they read, and the enthusiasm across the school has been wonderful to see.

Our primary boys are leading the way with this initiative. Their willingness to share their thoughts and the wide range of reading they are exploring has been impressive. From fast paced adventures to graphic novels and thoughtful stories, they are showing just how varied and exciting reading can be.

These reviews are especially valuable for reluctant readers. For students who do not yet know what they enjoy, seeing what a friend has loved can be the encouragement they need to try something new. A peer recommendation can open the door to a book that finally sparks their interest.

We also encourage parents to talk with their young people about choosing a book that a friend has recommended. This simple act not only helps students find something they may enjoy, but also strengthens the social aspect of reading. Sharing a love of a book is important because reading is not only a personal activity. It is something that connects us, gives us common ground and invites conversation.
