Library News - 24 April

This week, our library was filled with conversation, connection and a shared love of books as ten families came together for Paperbacks and Pizza, our Primary Parent–Son Book Club. We shared pizza, talked books and enjoyed a relaxed evening with parents and students equally engaged in ideas and stories.

This term’s focus is historical fiction, centred around World War II, with selected texts exploring themes of loyalty and survival. Three titles were offered to support a range of Year 5 and 6 reading levels. Morris Gleitzman’s Once was chosen as the opening novel for its accessibility, emotional impact and popularity with young readers. Titles by Katrina Nannestad were selected for their rich language, powerful imagery and sentence structures that strongly support comprehension and cognition. A third option offered variety, with some families receiving narrative non fiction biographies and others well loved fiction titles. Wherever possible, Australian authors were prioritised, reflecting our commitment to celebrating local voices and stories.

Research consistently shows that children benefit when parents are actively involved in reading alongside them. Studies highlighted by The Conversation remind us that reading together remains important even after children can read independently, strengthening comprehension, motivation and enjoyment of reading. Events like Paperbacks & Pizza create space for these shared experiences and reinforce reading as something that is valued and enjoyed at home.

Thank you to the families who joined us and helped make the evening such a success. We look forward to continuing to build our reading community through opportunities that bring families together around stories.  Our next meeting is in Week 8 of this term.  If any other families would like to be part of this journey in the future- please email ttempleton@slc.qld.edu.au.  We would love to see you there!

Kind Regards,
