By Head of Instrumental Music, Mr Ross Capern

Throughout the year, our students have been fortunate to learn from an inspiring group of guest educators and conductors, each generously sharing their time, expertise and passion for music. From refining technique to exploring new ways of expression, these sessions have enriched our ensembles and opened our young musicians’ eyes to the possibilities of performance.

We were delighted to welcome Jenny Moon, Paul Holley OAM, Captain John Carpenter, Tim Allen-Ankins and Professor Rob McWilliams into our rehearsal rooms and onto our podiums. Each brought a unique perspective and artistry, giving students a glimpse into the professional music world and leaving behind lessons that will resonate long after the final note.

Jenny Moon
As Associate Artistic Director at Voices of Birralee, Jenny Moon brings extensive experience as a conductor and educator. Earlier this year, she inspired our young singers in Treblehood to develop confidence, artistry and ensemble awareness. Her connection to one of Australia’s leading choral organisations broadens students’ horizons, offering professional guidance and exposure to a diverse range of repertoire.

Paul Holley OAM
Artistic Director of Voices of Birralee, Paul Holley worked with Little Brotherhood at the Intermediate Ensembles Camp, bringing energy, insight and a love of singing. His session encouraged students to listen deeply, shape phrases thoughtfully and experience the power of singing together. Through the ongoing Lauries–Birralee partnership, our students continue to benefit from Paul’s vision for choral excellence.

Captain John Carpenter
With his background in the Irish Defence Forces School of Music, John Carpenter brought expert knowledge in brass and ensemble direction. A proud Lauries Old Boy (Class of 2002), John’s return to campus offered students in our Senior Concert Band the chance to learn from one of their own. His practical tips, supportive guidance and focus on balance and precision helped the ensemble elevate their playing while celebrating the connections between past and present Lauries musicians.

Tim Allen-Ankins
Associate Principal Horn of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and another proud Lauries Old Boy (Class of 2014), Tim Allen-Ankins brought energy and professional insight to our students. Working closely with the horn players, he encouraged them to explore phrasing, tone and balance, demonstrating how the horn adds colour and character to an ensemble. Tim’s journey from Lauries to the professional stage is a compelling reminder of what dedication and passion in music can achieve.

Professor Rob McWilliams
Visiting from Yamaha Music Education Australia, Professor Rob McWilliams worked with our junior Concert Band and their conductors, sharing his expertise in wind repertoire and expressive playing. His engaging direction sparked enthusiasm and helped students bring new energy and confidence to their music-making.

The presence of these exceptional educators and conductors has been invaluable in supporting our students’ growth this year. Their expertise, generosity and connections have not only strengthened our ensembles but also deepened the joy of music-making across the College. Whether through our partnerships with Birralee, the professional guidance of Yamaha Music Education Australia or the mentorship of Old Boys who now lead professional careers, these experiences remind us of the vibrant community that surrounds and nurtures Lauries musicians.
