2024 Churchie Literature Challenge

The intermediate boys had three teams consisting of Harry Dobbin, James Gormley, Ji Jenkins, Sam Totterman, Paddy Kavanagh, Michael Woolley, Nate Ryder, Emmanuel Sabiyumva and Ewan Thomson.

Challenge 2 saw the boys separated into discussion groups with the other schools. Each group had between 7 to 10 people, often meaning they were a token boy in a group of girls. Students were judged on a criterion that included the capacity to contribute ideas, listen and extend the conversation based on their gothic reading. A teacher from St Margaret’s mentioned to me in the hallway that a Lauries boy, Sam Totterman, was a standout in her group. Each boy contributed thoughtfully, expressed themselves articulately and it was a valuable experience for the boys to make connections between the texts and with others.

The last challenge of the day was a creative response task. Inspired by a gothic mood board with written and visual extracts, students were challenged to craft their own gothic texts.
