East Timor Immersion
These holidays, students from St Laurence's College and Padua will be teaming together for the East Timor Immersion. The 14-day experience will take us over many different parts of Timor and give us the opportunity to see and walk in solidarity with the people of this country. The students will visit remote villages where they will experience life of those in the country living at the margins. Students will meet peers from Timor and get a chance to see a different outlook to anything they have before. We come to Timor not as tourists but as guests to walk in solidarity with the people.
Sony Camp: September 14-16
St. Laurence’s College are proud to announce that they will be hosting their 16th Annual SONY Camp and once again we will be hosting with students from Loreto College. The Camp is a three-day residential camp for children with intellectual and physical disabilities, where our students take on the responsibility of caring and supporting these campers for a weekend. It is to be held at St Laurence’s College, 82 Stephens Rd, South Brisbane on September 14-16, 2024. This camp would not be possible without nursing assistance to accommodate some of the medical needs of our campers for tasks that could not be done by our students and Parents wishing to give up some time to be a Night Time Reader.
For those interested, there are plenty of times and opportunities for you to get involved.
We are looking for parents in the community who can be nurses on the camp. The camp day begins at 7am and generally ends at 7.30pm each night while the Secondary students are required to go to bed at 10pm. On Sunday 15 September we will be heading to Dreamworld so we are looking for nurses who can spend the day with us.
- We are also seeking the added assistance of 2 nurses wishing to stay overnight. This will be on the Saturday and Sunday evening.
- Nurses shifts for the night stay go from 10pm-2am and 2am-6am at which point the day nurses arrive.
Another opportunity for the Laurie’s community to get involved are as Night Time Readers. Most of our campers are primary aged. Nothing better than finishing an exciting day with a lie down and a good book. We will have a big selection of books on offer but if you have a favourite please bring it along. Bedtime is 7.30pm and we will have plenty of nursing assistance and staff wondering around to assist with the more adventurous type.
We are seeking an expression of interest from any registered nurses or doctors who would be willing to assist us on this camp. We are seeking the assistance of anyone wishing to assist as a Night Time Reader. For more information, please contact James Mendoza at jmendoza@slc.qld.edu.au or call 3010 1115.
