From the Principal

Welcome back to Term 4. I hope all families enjoyed a well-deserved break and that our young men have returned refreshed, ready to finish the year with energy and purpose. The final Term always brings a mix of excitement and reflection, offering an opportunity to celebrate what has been achieved and to ensure we each finish strongly.

Service Beyond Borders: India Immersion
During the holidays, a group of senior students and staff embarked on the India Immersion, a life-changing experience that deepened their understanding of faith, service and justice. Partnering with Edmund Rice communities in Kolkata, our students worked alongside local schools and community organisations, witnessing firsthand the power of solidarity and compassion. Their reflections on returning have been deeply moving, reminding us that a Lauries education is as much about the heart as it is about the mind. I congratulate all students who saved for, planned and engaged in the immersion, and I thank Mr Heshusius, Ms Mavritsky and Mr McNuff for their leadership and supervision on the trip. A detailed account and reflection on the Immersion can be read in Mr Heshusius' own newsletter article.

Celebrating Excellence: Mrs Nataleen Nixon-Kilburn’s TEACHX Award
We begin the term with wonderful news for our staff. Our own Mrs Nataleen Nixon-Kilburn, Head of Faculty for Humanities, was recently honoured as a TEACHX Award recipient, recognising her exceptional leadership and commitment to education in Queensland. Her innovative work in developing critical thinking and inquiry-based learning programs has had a transformative impact on students and staff alike. This recognition is not only a personal achievement for Mrs Nataleen Nixon-Kilburn but also a proud moment for the entire Lauries community.

AIC Athletics: Strength, Teamwork, and Spirit
Congratulations to all boys who represented the College at the AIC Athletics Championships. The squad competed with trademark Lauries spirit, discipline, teamwork and quiet determination. Strong performances across multiple age groups reflected the depth of talent in our program and the outstanding guidance of our coaching and support staff. I thank Mr Byron and the Sports Department for their outstanding work. This year, the team improved from 7th to 4th place — a fantastic achievement. Well done to all.

Year 9 Camp: Challenge, Leadership, and Connection
Our Year 9 cohort returned from camp this week, where students were challenged to step outside their comfort zones, build teamwork and reflect on what it means to be part of the Lauries community. The program continues to be an important milestone in our Lauries formation journey, one that encourages courage, empathy and leadership in action.

Jazz on the Hill and Music Camp
Last week the community had the pleasure of experiencing Jazz on the Hill. This wonderful event was a collaboration between school bands, external organisations and, most impressively, a staff band. The evening was a great success, and I encourage all families to come along next year if you have not experienced it before.
This week, our Music students depart for their annual Music Camp, a highlight of the calendar. It offers valuable time for collaboration, rehearsal and creativity. We wish all participants the very best and look forward to the performances that will follow later this term.

Year 12s: The Final Stretch
Our Year 12 students have entered the final, most important stage of their journey at St Laurence’s. Over the coming weeks, they will sit their final classes in preparation for their External Examinations. I urge all Year 12s to stay disciplined, seek support from their teachers, and maintain balance through good routines and rest.
