School Libraries Light the Way

This week we celebrate Queensland School Library Week and the theme, School Libraries Light the Way, is a perfect reflection of what our library aims to achieve every day. School libraries illuminate learning, belonging, curiosity and joy. They support students as readers and researchers and provide welcoming spaces for recreation and wellbeing. They also champion equity and inclusivity by ensuring every student can access resources, experiences and opportunities that help them thrive.

Our library is proud to be part of this work and here is how we have started 2026 lighting the way.

Our book clubs for both primary and secondary students have been running since Week 2 and they continue to be wonderful spaces for reading for pleasure, lively conversations and building connections between young readers. Alongside this, we are putting new books into the spotlight by promoting recent arrivals to staff and students so that everyone can discover something new to enjoy.  We are also supporting teacher professional learning by keeping our digital access to teacher journals current, reliable and easy to use. These resources are shared across school networks so teachers have up to date information, new ideas and professional reading at their fingertips.  Students in Years 5 to 8 take part in regular library lessons that support student interest and reading engagement. These sessions are planned to build student efficacy in navigating their own reading journey. In Years 7 and 8 we are also collaborating with classroom teachers to deliver information literacy instruction that teaches students how to find information, evaluate it and use it ethically.

Our commitment to inclusivity continues with Lunar New Year activities beginning at the end of this week during language lessons and lunchtimes. These activities celebrate cultural diversity and create opportunities for students to learn about and appreciate the traditions of their peers.  And of course, the library remains home to its resident happy book dragon who lives and breathes book trivia and spreads reading joy at every opportunity. Creating an environment where enthusiasm for books and learning can flourish is one of the most delightful parts of the job.

Queensland School Library Week reminds us of the important role school libraries play within their communities. Whether we are nurturing readers, guiding researchers, supporting staff or celebrating culture, we are proud to be a guiding light in the life of our school. Here is to a bright and book filled week and to all the ways school libraries continue to light the way.
