2019 – ‘A New Era of Pastoral Care and Learning’

During the conclusion of the 2018 School year we developed a theme that would encapsulate the changes that are occurring within the College and in the wider educational community. The above theme seems to honour this change.

On Thursday we commissioned our new Heads of House on Assembly.  This was to formally mark the movement to a House structure.  It was seen as significant that our new Year 12 boys were present on Wednesday to welcome all Year 5 and 7 boys to the College.  I thank the Seniors for the excellent level of care shown to the younger boys both at school and on public transport.

+4

Our Year 12 boys will be the last cohort at the College to seek tertiary entrance through the Overall Position (OP) system.  From 2020 Tertiary admissions will occur through the Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) system.  This change has seen great energy to support the learning of our younger boys.  We are also most conscious of supporting the current Seniors with their studies and QCS preparation during 2019.

New Staff
This year we welcome several new staff to the College to cater for staff changes, leave, internal structural change, retirements and resignations.  I enclose a full list of the new staff at the College and I welcome all to our Community.

New Students
On Wednesday we welcomed 168 new boys into Year 5 as well as over 125 new boys into Year 7 to join our Year 6 students from 2018 as they begin secondary schooling.  I also welcome 35 new boys in other year levels.  I thank the parents for placing their trust in our staff and I trust that these new families will come to appreciate that which makes our Lauries community special.  I welcome all 1919 boys to the College.

Refurbishments and Building
Over the course of the holiday break several projects were begun to improve the learning environment for the staff and students. Those include: new spaces for English and Mathematics, a new Music space, a significant shade structure over the quadrangle, a new Pastoral Precinct and changes to staff offices and the Bookroom.  The timeline was very tight and I must congratulate Ms Sharyn Finn, Mr John Butterworth and Mr Ben Reyneke for their exceptional work.

I wish to also affirm the Maintenance staff of Sean Doyle, Jannie Bloem, Chris Davidson, Colin Trasler, Stephen Bloch and Peter Mikulic for their work ethic and commitment to the College.  I will announce this term further planned renovations to the College site to support the boys’ learning.

If you would like to view a timelapse of the shade structure construction, please see the Development News article.

College Connections
Throughout the course of this week I have been privileged to hear the stories of many of our students and their families.  St Laurence’s College has made a significant impact on the lives of many and it is my hope that our families remain connected to our values and to each other as we journey through 2019.

Have a great year!

Identity Matters

Welcome to 2019

This year we focus on a ‘New Era of Pastoral Care and Learning’ as we move to a vertical system for Pastoral Care and our Year 11 group embark on the ATAR journey as a significant change in the educational landscape in Queensland is unfolding. For our community, this change engages us to think of how we live the Inclusive Community Touchstone from the Charter for Catholic Schools in the Edmund Rice Tradition where ‘Our community is accepting and welcoming, fostering right relationships and committed to the common good.’

Inclusivity was a hallmark of the life of Jesus as he showed us what it means to open our hearts to include all, particularly the ones that are rejected by mainstream society. For Edmund Rice, the Founder of the Christian Brothers, he too showed what it meant to be inclusive by offering an education to those who were on the margins in Waterford. The education offered was practical and ‘hands-on’ so that students could be prepared for contributing to society and in time, boys from all walks of life, rich and poor alike, were clamouring for a place in his schools as what was offered was an education that liberated. More than this, the education on offer was pastoral in it approach so that every person who attended his schools was welcomed. Edmund Rice, as with Jesus, was committed to developing loving, compassionate relationships that sought to uplift all of humanity. This came with a particular mindset as expressed in St Paul’s letter to the Ephesians:

I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call— one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. But grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ's gift. (Ephesians 4:1-7)

This year we are called to create relationships with others that is inclusive and welcoming, acting with humility and patience in the service of all.

I encourage you this coming week to re-read this scripture and reflect on what that might mean for you in the coming year. How will we live so as to be ‘Good News’ for ourselves and others?

God Bless

Pastoral Matters

From the Head of Senior School

Can I warmly welcome both new and existing parents and students back to our community for what promises to be an exciting year.

Launching of the House System
In line with the College theme this year, which is ‘A New Era of Pastoral Care and Learning’, we formally launched the House system with the commissioning and blessing of our Heads of House. Each Head of House (HOH) was presented with a candle to signify our strong relationship with and need to walk with Jesus, and recognise this momentous change in the pastoral care of our young men.

Previously, we have worked in a horizontal or year level system of pastoral care. Now each student is connected to, and part of a House, or vertical system of pastoral care. Our Home rooms look very different with Year 7 through to Year 12 students, all in the one class during administration time. Our Year 11 and 12 students are now empowered and challenged to ‘step up’ as big brothers to their House mates.

Mobile Phones
Our new system of pastoral care also comes with other policy changes, which we will update you with in due course. A significant positive change is our new Mobile Phone Policy. Our main aim is for our students to interact socially with their mates, rather than be glued to their phone all day.

Each student is required to lock their mobile phone in their locker between the hours of 8.30am and 3.00pm, unless given special permission by their HOH (e.g. a medical condition). Student’s phones will be given to the Pastoral Precinct if found in their possession and can be collected after school. A consequence may also be given by their HOH.

Can I ask for parents to support us in this new policy as we firmly believe it is a positive change to support the boys and their social, emotional and academic growth.

Year 12 Buddies
Can I congratulate our Year 12 students for the way in which they have started this year. We have been receiving some wonderful messages from parents of Year 5 and 7 who are amazed with how our Year 12’s are caring for them both in their Home room, as well as on public transport.

Well done boys – keep up the excellent effort!

Student Leadership Forum
Our student leaders gathered at the end of the school holidays in order to develop their leadership skills, as well as plan for the year ahead. They participated in public speaking, conflict management and spiritual formation workshops. They heard from Ms Kenny, Mr Leadbetter and Br Damien Price. We also participated in abseiling down Kangaroo Point cliffs, and kayaking along the Brisbane River. I am very confident that our leaders are well prepared for a busy and exciting year.

Can I wish all parents and students the very best in starting the new year and as always,

Live Jesus in your hearts... Forever!

Welcome to all new families and welcome back to continuing students.   We are looking forward to a great year of music making.

Ensemble Rehearsals and Instrumental Music Lessons
All rehearsals and lessons commence next week beginning 4 February.  All students need to check the timetables in the music department and be prepared for their first lesson and rehearsal.  We have a large number of enrolments in lessons and we are at capacity. It is very important students don’t miss any lessons as we have very limited time and space for catch up lessons.

Music Camp Sunday 24  February – Tuesday 26 February.
A compulsory music camp for the senior ensembles will be held at Mapleton. Ensembles attending camp are: Concert Band 1, Big Band 1, Brotherhood, String Orchestra 1 and Guitar Orchestra 1. This is an exciting opportunity for our musicians to kick start the year, learn ensemble  music and improve their musical and social skills. Information will be sent home via tours and excursions. Please accept the tour ASAP.

Lauries Music Support Group Meeting Tuesday 12 February 6pm Music Department Room Mu 2
A great way to support your son at SLC is by joining the parent’s Music Support Group. Meetings are once a month on the second Tuesday of each month (term time).  Meetings are informal, generally less than an hour long and a great way to hear the details and help with the planning of upcoming music events!  If you are unable to make the meetings but available to help at concerts/events, join the group so you can be on our email list and be kept up to date. Please contact the music department if you have any questions.

The Learning Support Team for 2019

The Learning Support Department operates within the College to support students, teachers and parents in helping students to achieve optimum learning, despite the many and varied barriers to learning that may challenge them.

Students with particular learning needs are managed in year groups and below is listed the Case Managers for each year level. However, your son is supported at many levels of his school day: his Head of House, his House Mentor, his subject teachers as well as the coaches and managers of any teams that he may participate in. You can contact any of these people with your concerns as we all want to work together to help your son achieve success whilst at St Laurence’s College and beyond.

The Case Managers are:

  • Anita Bolton – Head of Department and Case Manager for years 11 and 12
  • Ronny Chaheen – Year 10
  • Jeanette Partington – Year 9
  • Ruth Little – Year 8
  • Deb Toohey – Year 7
  • Maria Murtas – ESL students
  • Megan Huber – International Students

All Case Managers will contact you within the next couple of weeks to introduce or reintroduce themselves but please feel free to contact them should you have any immediate concerns. Email is usually more effective, however we can be reached by phone through the College.

We wish all students a successful 2019.

Speech and Drama - Private Lessons

St Laurence’s College offers a program for students wishing to begin or improve their skills in Speech and Drama.

The lessons give students the necessary skills to become a confident speaker and performer in front of a live audience.  This will help in all walks of life, such as business, where presenting ideas or selling projects are becoming more necessary to a successful career.

Students of all ages are given the opportunity to perform at the Speech and Drama Showcase where they can show off their hard work and progression to fellow peers and families. As this program is run in conjunction with Trinity Guildhall College, London, students can do Speech and Drama exams, which would lead to a higher OP ranking (and equivalent).

The Trinity Guildhall exams range from Grade 4 through to Grade 8. Attaining a pass for grade 7 and 8 exams will give students the equivalent of an OP 8.  These exams include students memorising and performing between two and four monologues, improvisations, questions in character and a re-writing of a monologue.

Over the course of this program, students will learn Theatre games, the technique of Speech, Improvisation, Public Speaking and Performance skills. It also offers help for students with their written and oral assessment.

To enrol please ask the Drama Department for an enrolment form.

View the new Shade Structure Timelapse!

Over the holiday break, the College maintenance team has been hard at work updating facilities including new way-finding signage, additional offices and learning spaces as well as the construction of the shade structure of the main quadrangle.

As the 2018 Annual Appeal Building Fund project for 2018, the shade structure spans an impressive 1,360 square meters and towers 14.8 meters above the quadrangle. Providing vital shade for our students from both the sun and rain, this structure will play an integral part in the day-to-day activities of the College.

Building projects such as this would not be possible without financial assistance from members of our community. The College would like to thank all those who contributed to the Building Fund during last year’s Annual Appeal and, in particular, recognise Professor Michael and Dr Jacqueline Drew for their lead gift of $10,000. While this project was predominately financed by the College, it is due to the wholehearted support of the community that initiatives such as this can succeed moving forward.

Further details regarding this year's Annual Appeal project will be shared throughout Term 1.

Sports News

Director of Sport Report

Welcome to the 2019 Sporting Year!

2019 is building as an exciting year for the College’s Sports Department with introduction of new sports, improved communication strategies and some changes in staff structuring, all aimed at improving the opportunities and experiences of our boys in sport.

‘New’ AIC Sports
This year, the AIC competition has introduced AFL (Term 1) and Rugby League (Term 3) into the sporting program of the association. Both of these sports are on a two year trial, so that the association can gauge the interest in and sustainability of the sports going forward. In their first year, numbers of teams in each sport will be limited with a hope that as an association we can expand these offerings in the future. There was a fear with the introduction of these new sports that they would considerably take away from the participation in other sports. Initial numbers at St Laurence’s College show the opposite with our cricket and volleyball numbers remaining strong and the College also being able to field all AFL teams available.

School App
As you may already be aware, the College is now utilising our new mobile app to assist with communication out to our community. The feedback from parents involved in sport over the first week of using the app has been overwhelmingly positive. We would encourage every parent to download the app (where possible) and use it as the primary tool for sporting information. Gradually over the course of the first term, the sports department will reduce the number of email communications that we send out, instead placing this information on the app. This will include weekly schedules and team lists. Please visit our College website for more information on the mobile app.

Sports Office Changes
There have been some changes in the sports office staffing structure this year. This year we will have Mr Andrew Gibb in the role of Assistant Director of Sport. We also welcome Mr Kelevi Tuicolo to the full time role of Sports Administration Manager. Supporting Mr Sean O’Connor in the athletic development area of the College will be Mr Dexter Leckie. It is hoped that through the new roles, sport at Lauries can continue to improve in both giving opportunities for boys to be actively involved and that communication to the very large community of students, staff and parents is appropriate.

Trials this Weekend
This weekend the majority of our teams in AFL, Cricket and Volleyball will be playing trial games against Padua. These trial games are exactly that, trials. It is an opportunity for boys to prepare for the season and for coaches, age group coordinators and directors to make further decisions on the placement of students within teams.

Looking forward to a great year of sport ahead.

Director of Sport

Strength and Conditioning Report

Welcome to new and returning families in the Lauries community. The Strength and Conditioning program is proud to have been established within the school over the past four years. Year on year it has evolved and I’m excited to detail what 2019 has in store for our Community.

Mission of Lauries Strength and Conditioning Program:
“To create the most caring and challenging school Athletic Development Environment in AIC”.

Coaching Philosophy:
My coaching philosophy with adolescents entails a holistic long term approach. Care and Challenge (‘individual needs’ approach) are at the center of my decision making. Functional competence (mobility, stability) and movement competence (coordination and application in correct movement planes) are judged more important than numbers on a Bench Press. I believe in educating ‘age appropriate’ strength training and the physical, social and mental benefits of kids living an active lifestyle. The greatest buy-in the program experiences is with parental support.

What does this look like?
The Program consists of three components each with an ‘Aim’ and ‘Key Results’. The Aim is a concise description to understand overall outcome while the Key Results will determine the level of student ‘success’. This can outlined below.

Program Overview:

Program 1: Lauries to the Core Program (Year 7-10):
Aim: Physical fitness as a primary protector and enhancer for mental and physical well being.

Key Result 1: Enjoyment in having a physically active lifestyle.

Key Result 2: 100% of graduates to be physically active on a regular basis (every boy active)

How can my son become involved with this Program?
Each term, the Lauries to the Core program will be restricted to 20 students per year level (Year 7-9). Students will be allocated to the program on a “First Come, First Served” basis through parent acceptance on parent lounge. A letter outlining the program is attached.

3 Step Process to Participate:
Step 1: Parent email sports office (sports@slc.qld.edu.au) to express interest for their child.
Step 2: Student will be invited through parent lounge by the sports office. Each year level is capped at 20 invitations per term. Invitations are "First Come, First Come".
Step 3: Parent emailed of confirmation of enrolment in Lauries to the Core Term 1.

Follow the link to view the parents information letter: Lauries To The Core Parent Letter 2019.

Lauries to the Core Training days for the Term will be as follows:

Year Level Day and Time Dates (8 week program)
Year 7
Monday 3:15pm-4:30pm
11 February to 1 April
Year 8
Tuesday 3:15pm-4:30pm
12 February to 2 April
Year 9
Wednesday 3:15pm-4:30pm
13 February to 3 April

Program 2: Lauries Athletic Development Program (Year 7-9):
Aim: To holistically prepare boys for consistency in physical preparation practices and routines.  By delivering programs which bring about a graduated functional pathway of physical development and fundamental movement skill progression (18 point Lauries Athlete).

Key Result 1: Streamline of testing and training protocols to understand student’s level of fundamental movement skill and progression across year to year (6 Exercise Framework: Fundamental (0-1 points) -> Developing (2-3 points) -> Emerging (4-5 points).
Key Result 2: Collaboration across sports involving training load and well being management strategies (weekly monitoring).
Key Result 3: Develop culture in work ethic and self-improvement (consistency over time)

How can my son become involved with this program?
Each term, The Athletic Development Program will be restricted to 45 students total. The process for this program is different to the Lauries to the Core Step Process. For this Program students are required to attend a testing afternoon to be selected for the program. Selection is based on cohort (Year 7-9) and College Sport Commitment. Next week, the College will host two testing afternoons for students to become eligible for the program.
